World Values Survey activity - Comparing China, Japan, Korea on the importance of family in life

Comparing China, Japan, Korea on the importance of family in life

Due to the geographical relationship, China, Japan and South Korea are all eastern countries in Asia. Based on the cultural exchanges and infiltration of the three countries for thousands of years, China, Japan and South Korea have some similarities in cultural background and living customs. Compared with Western cultures that respect individualism, Chinese, Japanese and Koreans pay more attention to social groups based on family and family, and respect "group consciousness" in everything. To discover oneself in the relationship with others, the traditional concept of "family-oriented" has been influencing and dominating the thoughts and behaviors of the people of the Three Kingdoms. From a socio-cultural perspective, I compare the importance of family in the lives of Chinese, Japanese and South Korean citizens.

Through the <World Values Survey Wave 7: 2017-2022> Survey, I compared Japan, South Korea and China on the importance of family in life. The survey samples of China and South Korea are both selected in 2018, while the survey samples in Japan are in 2019. According to the survey results, 86.2% of China, 92% of Japan, and 88.9% of South Korea believe that family is very important in life. It seems that compared with China and South Korea, Japan's concept of family is stronger. The rather important country is China, accounting for 13%. This is followed by South Korea at 10.8% and Japan at 6.2%. The proportion of countries that considered not very important was the lowest but the three countries did not differ much.

From the perspective of age group, the countries in which family is the very important in life are China 87.6%, Japan 91.2%, South Korea 80.2%, and China rises to the second place.

From the point of view of marital status, China accounts for 86.2%, Japan accounts for 94.7%, South Korea accounts for 93.4%, and Japan and South Korea both exceed 90%, and there is not much difference.

From the perspective of the highest education level, the countries where family is the most important in life, China accounts for 79.7%, Japan accounts for 87.5%, South Korea accounts for 75.0%, China and South Korea account for less than 80%, and there is not much difference.

When different indicators are divided, there will be different changes. Therefore, the three countries are optimistic about the equal family model, but there are also certain differences. But no matter how it changes, the one who believes that family is the very important in life has always been Japan, which ranks first.

According to the most up-to-date Inglehart–Welzel cultural map, it can be seen that China, Japan and South Korea belong to the Confucian cultural circle, and the distance between the three countries is very close. At the same time, according to the survey results, it is found that the family concepts of the three countries with different cultural backgrounds have both common points and differences. Under the influence of Confucianism, the three countries of China, Japan and South Korea, all belonging to Asian oriental culture, have a common sense of "family-oriented" and pay attention to the homogeneity of family members. Most of them have a sense of "filial piety" to support their parents. Among them, the awareness of "filial piety" in Japan is the strongest. In addition, it should be known that the harmony and unity of the traditional families in these three countries in ancient times was established on the basis of the hierarchical subordination relationship between the family members of "rank and inferiority, rank and inferiority orderly", which was a kind of unequal harmony and unity. The family in today's society is based on the mutual equality and independence of family members, and it is an equal relationship with each other. In today's economic globalization, family issues in China, Japan and South Korea are worth studying and comparing. Comparing the family concepts and cultural awareness of different countries will help people today to keep a sober head in all kinds of conceptual changes and changes. Grasp the correct family concept to create a harmonious and stable social life environment.
