Reading 1 - What is globalization? - Jirky Samyn

Summary

Even though the concept of globalization has been around for centuries, the academic field has only started studying it in recent years. Therefore there is no clear definition yet that is specific but encompasses every aspect of globalization.

The most basic observation about globalization is that the world is becoming “a single place”. This observation impacted various social sciences, such as sociology, political science, and anthropology. Throughout history, there were multiple ways to form this single place. Our present-world system was created through the expansion of capitalism.

We can characterize globalization in a few different ways. 1) global connectivity and global consciousness. 2) The four major dimensions: social, economic, political, and cultural. 3) The four points of reference: Nation-state, self, international-system, and humanity. Some aspects of globalization are more popular than others.

Learned

I thought it was very interesting to read about the past and history of globalization and the way our single place was formed or could have been formed if things went differently. It was also an eye-opener to read that there never will be a fully globalized world. Because when you see our world becoming more and more globalized, you would imagine that at some point there will be a time when it is fully globalized.

Discussion

Since people are starting to form more anti-capitalism movements, how would this impact our path to globalization?
