Reading 1: What is globalization? - WANG XIAOLING, 왕효령

What Is Globalization? - Roland Robertson and Kathleen E. White

1) Summary

Through this book I learned about the concept of globalization, but the definition of globalization is controversial. The author gives us a simple understanding of the process of discussion and research on the concept of globalization through examples and background.

Globalization not only refers to the increasingly interconnected objective facts in the world, but also refers to cultural and subjective problems. Globalization is not simply an economic issue, a political issue, a social issue or an international relations issue, but above all a cultural issue. We should not only take a cultural focus on globalization, but also understand and study it from a cultural perspective, because the global sphere as a whole is, first and foremost, a sociocultural system, a global cultural system composed of pluralistic societies. In addition, according to what was introduced in the professor's class. Globalization consists of four main aspects of human life: cultural, social, political and economic.

2) Interesting point

What I find interesting is that the author disagrees with Wallerstein's abstract, simplistic interpretation of globalization. The author emphasizes that the process of globalization is relatively independent from the social process in a strict sense. It has its own autonomy and logic, and its development will become more and more complicated with the acceleration of the process. Therefore, globalization is not only an object of interdisciplinary research, but also an object of cross-cultural research.

3) Discussion point

I think understanding diversity is part of the concept of globalization. The concept of globalization leads to an awareness of diversity, an interesting mix of people, nations and cultures from different backgrounds. Will it make us more tolerant? Or more hateful? Or learn more?

Comments

  1. The concept of globalization gives us an interesting mix of people, countries and cultures from different backgrounds, and I think it makes us really realize what it means to be diverse and it makes us learn a lot more.
