Reading Assignment 2: “What is the relation between culture and globalization?” LUAN QIANYUE
Cultural Globalization - Tomlinson
(1) Summary
Globalization is not just a matter of politics, economic movements or the rise of trans-regional and large regions. Tomlinson believes that there is a multidimensional "globalization" in which the cultural dimension is an important area that needs to be studied separately.
Tomlinson explains the importance of time and space issues, cultural imperialism, "deterritorialization," the impact of media and communication technologies, and the possible development of more international cultures by examining the relationship between globalization and contemporary culture . John Tomlinson introduced the dimension of culture in the research of globalization theory, trying to construct the global cultural picture. He analyzed the relationship between globalization and culture, put forward the proposition of global culture, and defined the concept of global culture. Emphasizes the necessity of studying global culture. In his view, cosmopolitanism is a value orientation, and global culture should have a national sense of belonging to the world.
(2) Interesting point
Today's surging wave of globalization, on the one hand, accelerates the exchanges between cultures, expands the scope of cultural exchanges, and strengthens the overall awareness of human beings in the cultural spirit; The crisis and loss made it difficult to sublimate the true cultural spirit. In any case, we must see the following two facts: First, the development of globalized culture is not only a cultural issue, but a process of interweaving between economy, politics and culture; second, American culture is in the development of globalized culture. With significant influence, its expansion created tensions between the cosmopolitan and national character of the culture. Therefore, in the process of research and development of globalized culture, both national parochialism and universalism have obvious limitations. Cultural exchanges must be realized through equal dialogue, and true equality is not only the equality of cultural identities, but also the equality of cultural identities. An equality of economic and political status.
3) Discussion point
Will "cultural globalization" kill cultural diversity? Does cultural globalization do more good than harm?

ReplyDeleteI think the advantages of cultural globalization outweigh the disadvantages. Cultural globalization is the process of integration and unification of cultures of various countries. Therefore, it does not kill cultural diversity. Different countries have different cultures. In essence, the cultures between countries are still different, but they influence and integrate with each other.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that the globalisation of culture will stifle cultural diversity. Cultural globalisation allows for a better exchange of cultures so that they can learn from each other and spread local cultures better. I think the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.
ReplyDeleteGlobalization is like building highways to connect big cities and small towns. Therefore, globalization itself will not kill cultural diversity, but in the context of global culture, the lack of thorough economic openness and political freedom is the main reason for the loss of cultural diversity.
