What Is Globalization?
What Is Globalization?
Roland Robertson and Kathleen E. White
1)Summary
This article tells us about various ideas
about globalization. A single definition of globalization is known to
increasing connectivity (or interconnectedness) whether long process or short
process. The author argues that globalization consists of an increase in
connectivity and an increase in consciousness. In addition, there are four dimensions
of globalization, which are cultural dimension, social dimension, political dimension,
and economic dimensions. The cultural dimension has become more prominent due
to the economic dimension. For example, McDonald’s is currently spread all over
the world. But there are some menus that differ from original McDonalds’. This
phenomenon occurs because each country has a different culture. The author
argues that it is not right behavior to think about which of these four
dimensions is more important. These are more noticeable or less noticeable
compared to other things. It depends on the situation. In other words, the
author said that it we do not to choose the best of these. And the idea that we
ignore environment is not good. So, the human’s consciousness of the
environment is prat of the modern human culture. Finally, we have to remember
that the importance of not reifying globalization. It means that we have to
recognize the conceptual status of globalization.
2)Interesting point & 3) discussion
point
What I was interested in was how to think
about the dimension of globalization. In the past, I looked at globalization only
based on the cultural dimension. So, I could not think that it could be
combined with anything else. And it was newly discovered that this could make
another dimension stand out. After reading this, I could think of examples that
combine economic dimension and cultural dimension. McDonald's in Korea, for
example, has McDonald's ‘Bulgogi Burger’, which combines bulgogi which is a
traditional Korean food and hamburgers.
As we can communicate on the Internet now, communication has become
faster. As a result, it is expected that future globalization will proceed
faster and share cultural, political, economic, and social dimension of each
other will accelerate. Of course, there are many advantages that emerge as the
speed of globalization increases. However, I think this could undermine the
culture of each individual or country, so how can this phenomenon affect
globalization? Should the speed of globalization proceed faster or slow down
for cultural preservation even if this happens?
