Hofstede: An Analysis of the Individualism Index in China, Korea and Ireland

——HE YUNONG

I compared China, South Korea and France in the Hofstede variable, and it can be seen from the figure that the individualism index of the three countries has the largest difference, so I analyzed the reasons for the differences in the individualism index of the three countries.

China and South Korea are collectivist with 20 and 18 points respectively, while to my surprise France is individualistic with a score of 71, far ahead of China and South Korea. For this I performed the following analysis.

South Korea is slightly more collectivist than China.

  1. Collectivism in South Korea As can be seen from the management ideas of Korean companies, Korean companies particularly emphasize pride and teamwork, and encourage every employee to integrate into the group and carry forward the spirit of unity and collectivism. For example, the unity and harmony and pioneering spirit of the LG group.
  2. China's collectivism: China's historical development process has always emphasized the concept of "home country". "Home" and "country" are collectives of different sizes but with the same concept. This sense of identity and belonging to the collective is deeply rooted in our national culture. And Chinese people are taught from childhood that "unity is strength".

France is a country where individualism is paramount.

The mainstream French culture respects and values the realization of self-worth, worships wisdom and taste, and pursues freedom and equality.

They are good and courageous to express themselves, and do not want to be a follower of ideas and a convergence of views. In France, children develop a sense of having a unique opinion compared to others from an early age, emphasizing and highlighting the independent opinion of the individual is a deeply ingrained habit.
