READING 2 : What is the relation between culture and globalization ? hyojin lim
summary
De-territorialization means that not only physical, environmental, and climatic locations, but also the importance of cultural geographical locations such as all self-definition, ethnic boundaries, and classification practices accumulated around them are weakening. Culture is no longer 'connected' to the constraints of the local environment.
In fact, the idea of de-territorialization has a fairly radical theoretical meaning in the traditional way of understanding culture. Culture has long had implications for linking it to the concept of a fixed place. The concept of 'culture' implicitly links meaning. In the long run, the 'weakening' of the traditional relationship between cultural experiences and geographical areas will prove to be the most widespread impact of cultural globalization. But we need to know exactly what this entails. De-territorialization does not simply lose the experience of local culture: it does not mean that regions and the specificities, nuances, and differences they create suddenly disappear completely. On the contrary, the region thrives on globalization
De-territorialization occurs in a complex set of economic, political, and technological factors, and in fact, it is not a phenomenon that can be usefully grouped into one-dimensional analysis like globalization itself.
The agenda of global cultural analysis certainly includes an understanding of the 'escape' pace of modern media technology and systems, perhaps extending to the design of viable strategies for their regulation. But back to the general theme of de-territorialization, as I have hinted earlier, I would suggest that there is at least a bud of optimism in this process on the broader cultural and political challenges posed by global connectivity.
Interesting items
Things that happen in distant parts of the world, though not as vivid as events in our neighborhood, nevertheless, have an increasing importance in our lives - especially because it can have easily traceable results for us. Thus, the positive potential of de-territorialization is that it can promote new sensibilities of cultural openness, human reciprocity and global ethical responsibility in transforming our experience of local life.
Discussion point
What does all this speed and immediate approach to the value of patience, such as our emotions and social relationships, mean in the long run?
