THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GLOBALIZATION AND CULTURE

(1)Summary

American sociologist John Tomlinson (John Tomlinson) emphasized that the phenomenon may be just because of the expansion of modernization, the loss of the foundation of regional culture, but this is not the result of cultural expansion. Under the conditions of global technological and economic progress and integration, national culture can easily lose its focus. Therefore, it is misleading to blame one country for global trends. It should be seen that all countries are affected by global cultural change. In the future, the term "globalization" may become the object of criticism, replacing the accusation of American cultural imperialism. Globalization, on the one hand, refers to the compression of the world; When talking about globalization, many people see it only as an economic phenomenon, but there are multiple causes and effects of globalization. Economic imperialism is a fundamental feature of 20th century modernity. There is no doubt that imperialism, whether political or economic, has significant influence and control over the economy of the weaker side. However, if it is further concluded that economic imperialism also has cultural control, in his view, the problem is not so simple. The so-called "cultural imperialism" means that one society dominates another. He believed that one society could not dominate another. What is true is that one society influences the way another society or culture imagines itself and influences the way they actually think. This is a very deep and very subjective question . That is to say, cultural imperialism is about people's consciousness, the way people structure the world.

(2)Interesting point

Some people say that American culture itself is very strong, which is not true; nor can we say that a society is very culturally strong. The United States is indeed very strong economically and militarily, but can we infer that it is also very strong culturally? Can we say that the United States is culturally very confident and culturally unified? ? Apparently not the United States has a large number of cultures, such as Hispanic, black, Anglo-sectarian cultures, and there are urban anxieties that arise from these cultures. . When studying the relationship between globalization and culture, it is important to see the dilemma of the concept of cultural imperialism. They don't just exist in a place called the West, they also exist in China, Latin America, they are all over the world. This is modernity. In its essence, modernity is globalization. To treat culture only as cultural heritage, people need to see the innovation of culture. Culture is always changing, and we should not only focus on the cultural identity in the cultural heritage, but must face reality and face the modification of the identity of the globalized and modernized cultural heritage. If you always stick to the cultural past and cultural protection, you will of course worry about the control of American culture, and there will inevitably be a "balance" problem. In the era of globalization, all cultural heritage, no matter where it is, will be eroded and destroyed. Therefore, culture should be more present, and should be actually created in the present.

(3)Discussion point

Will the culture of the global cultural era weaken or strengthen the culture of national identity?

Comments

  1. I think If the vitality of the national culture is strong enough, and the economy and politics are enough to support the development of the national culture, then in the process of globalization, the identity of the nation, region or country can be established, and the national characteristics can be strengthened; if the vitality of the national culture is not strong enough , the economy and politics are not enough to support the development of the national culture, then globalization will weaken the national identity, and it is likely to become a cultural consumption market of other nationalities, causing the deterioration of the national culture itself and the loss of cultural identity. .
