Reading Assignment 2: What is the relation between culture and globalization?—HAO JINGYU호청유
(1). Summary
While cultural globalization promotes social integration and provides new opportunities for thousands of people, it may also weaken the uniqueness of native cultures, which in turn may lead to a sense of identity loss, exclusion and even conflict. This is especially true of traditional societies and communities, which are heavily influenced by rapid "modernisation" from the outside world that does not fit the local environment.
Cultural globalization is a dynamic force for change, not a rigid set of forms or parameters that must be rigidly adhered to. As the World Commission on Culture and Development (WCCD) has pointed out, the culture of a society is neither static nor static, but is in constant change, influencing and being influenced by other worldviews and forms of expression. In the current era of globalization, the speed and intensity of global capital, labor and information flows are unprecedented, and local cultures are being affected by homogenization. Balancing the benefits of integration into a globalized world with preserving the uniqueness of local cultures requires careful walking. As Clifford Geertz (1973:14) said, "Culture is not a force to which social events can be attributed to a cause".
(2). Interesting point
I think Tomlinson's account of culture and globalization is very interesting. He thinks that we can then see a universal pattern of dissolution in the linkage between cultural experience and regional place. He discusses the uneven nature of this experience and the relationship between first and third WORLD societies, the hybridization of cultures, and the special role of communication and media technologies in this process of non-territorial expansion. Finally, the cultural politics of cosmopolitanism is discussed. To put it simply, Microsoft, Google, McDonald's, CNN, Nike and Starbucks, as mentioned in the article, have great influence on the world, and they have both advantages and disadvantages. The world is round, and the cultures of each region will collide and merge with each other one day.
(3). Discussion point
Today's society is gradually surrounded by different cultures from all over the world. Will we be able to remember the traditional culture in the near future? Are we going to continue to innovate for a stronger global culture?
