What is the relation between politics and globalization?

 - Gerard Delanty and Chris Rumford

1) Summary

Political globalization has been widely discussed in the globalization literature, the process of political globalization opens up new possibilities of liberation, on the other hand globalization leads to the loss of autonomy and the fragmentation of the social world. The authors argue that political globalization refers to the tensions arising from the interplay of three processes: global geopolitics, global normative culture, and polycentric networks. Second, the author argues that the direction of political globalization is not a new global governance order or a world society, but a transnational political action that challenges neoliberal politics. The author supports his point through four examples of transitions in nationality and citizenship, public sphere and political communication, civil society, space and borders.

Because of the conditions of globalization, the nation-state has apparently become detached from the state. The political community of the country does not exercise sovereignty over the country, and the country has lost most of its sovereignty. One dimension of the global transformation of nation-states is the rise of sub-state politics.
Global civil society greatly amplifies the global normative culture, and political globalization is most evident in the transformation of the wider public sphere through political communication and social change. The “civil socialization” of politics both reinforces the idea that politics is increasingly shaped by a regulated global culture and points to the transformation of the nation-state as a venue for political struggle. The increased scale of politics as a result of globalization has led to a major reassessment of the role and meaning of borders and spaces in political construction. The emergence of new political spaces and the consequent border/reborder opportunities. Second, there is an increasing emphasis on mobility, flow and networking, which either connect existing places in novel ways or represent emerging spatial forms. The relationship between space and boundaries is central to understanding political globalization. New spaces and new forms of connection can be seen as an integral part of social and political relations. In modernity, the mastery of space – through boundary mechanisms, foundations Facility networks and state institutions - are at the heart of political community building.

Politics is built around new tensions caused by political globalization. Political conflict centers on the state versus civil society, the right to difference, the individual versus community, liberal democracy versus cosmopolitanism. In fact, political globalization creates the possibility for the proliferation of sites of political conflict around a widening set of concerns: governance, identity, mobility, and community, most prominently.

2) Interesting items

The author cites the results of the 2005 French constitutional referendum on the ratification of the European constitution in his presentation of the nation-state's transformation perspective, as an indication of how influential the nation's public is. I am impressed by this. I think the power of the public is strong. A country cannot develop without the promotion of the masses. The public promotes the development of society. Therefore, a country must respect the opinions and ideas of the public in order to prosper.

3) Discussion angle

The author said that most parts of the world have some form of democratic government, but China does not have a democratic government, so does a democratic government or no democratic government have much influence on a country? Or what is the difference between the two?
