WVS:Analysis of Religious Importance to China, South Korea, Japan and Indonesia

——HE YUNONG

I compared the seventh World Values Survey (2017-2022) among China, South Korea, Japan and Indonesia on whether religion is important in life. To my surprise, 98.1% of Indonesia think religion is very important, while 86.2% of China think it is not very important and not important at all. Secondly, China and Japan are similar, with a high rate of believing that religion is not important in life, while South Korea has a medium rate, with 35.8% believing that it is rather important and very important.
In the Inglehart-Welzel World Cultural Map2022, we can see that China, Japan and South Korea are close to each other, all belonging to Confucianism and located in the middle and upper part of the map; Indonesia is far from China, Japan and South Korea, belonging to African Islam and located in the lower left area of the map.

China, Japan and South Korea are similar because of their close geographical differences and little cultural differences. So why is there such a big difference in the importance of religion between China and Indonesia? Because China advocates Marxism, many people are materialists. Materialism is based on theories that everyone can see and touch. Materialist philosophy emphasizes practicality rather than truth. The emphasis is to maintain and carry forward the consensus things first, so as to ensure that things can be done more efficiently. Therefore, the Chinese advocate continuous self-improvement, self-reliance, and pin their hopes on themselves.

Indonesians, on the other hand, have been indoctrinated with religious ideas since pre-school education. Religion can be said to be spiritual food. The main reason is because Indonesia has its own special ideology, known as "Pancasila", which is the first principle of the five principles of Indonesia's founding, and the most important principle is "believe in a unique god", which means " Believe in the uniqueness of God", the popular interpretation is "must believe in religion". So religion is an integral part of Indonesian life.
