Reading 1: What is globalization? - 진심이 CHEN XINYI

 1) Summary

Through this book, I understand the concept of globalization and the word globalization, which is not only a concept, but also a phenomenon of the development of human society. Although there are many definitions of globalization, it usually refers to the increasing connections between people in different countries and regions around the world. Human life is not limited to one's home, one's birthplace, or even one's country. We know that beyond the mountains there is the sea, and beyond the sea there is another country. Countries became interdependent in politics, economy and trade. The food we eat and the clothes we wear come from across the ocean. Through the discussion of examples, the author gives us a simple understanding of the process of discussion and research on the concept of globalization. Globalization is not only political and economic, but also social and cultural.

2) Interesting points

I find it interesting that the authors disagree with Wallerstein's interpretation of the affiliations of globalizing states. Wallerstein's world-system theory is a theory about social modernization, and American sociologist Wallerstein is a representative figure of contemporary world-system theory. He argued that the cause of the industrial revolution in Western countries was not within these countries, but in the relations between the countries that had formed a single world system. In this world system, there is a hierarchy between states, with a few states becoming core states and a majority of states becoming their vassals. Despite its shortcomings, the academic value of Wallerstein's world-system theory cannot be denied. For example, he proposed a unique business cycle theory, that is, economic phenomena from a political perspective.

3) Discussion points

I think globalization is a good phenomenon. However, globalization will also create a world system, which dominates globalization. It is worth thinking about how to survive in this world system as a developing country.
