BLOG 2: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GLOBALIZATION AND CULTURE

Summary

Tomlinson tells what the relationship is between culture and globalization, according to him there is multidimensional globalization in which the cultural dimension is an important area that needs to be studied separately. First, he explains globalization, globalization is the evaluation of growing networks of interconnectedness and interdependence characterized by the material, social, economic and cultural life of the modern world.

Then he talks about different cultures and how what he thinks the relationship is regarding globalization. Furthermore, how cultural imperialism, westernization, americanization, and iconic brands such as Mcdonald's, Coca-Cola, and Malboro has impacted globalization. He thinks national culture is just as important as a global culture, different cultures have an impact on each other because of the connectivity, and this creates a global culture.

Interesting point

In the reading, Tomlinson speculates about the globalization process and that it will lead to a single global culture. I think we're going in that direction if you look at what it was like before the internet and now, the internet has connected the world. This allows us to pick up things from other cultures and eventually a large mix of culture can arise.

Discussion point

Is it a good thing that through connectivity we can adopt different aspects of different cultures? and can a single global culture end racism?
