READING 2 : What is the relation between culture and globalization ? YASMINE HARFOUCHE

Summary :

Globalization is connected to many fields in the global society. The author, Tomlinson is affirming that there is a concerning way of culture changing and that culture is becoming “common”. How culture become globalized can be justified and explained by: media proximity, cosmopolitanism and hybridization. Those concepts are showing that globalization is also about transforming cultural experience and not only about global movement of capital or labor.

Globalization comes to unify people and culture. Tomlinson is quoting Ronald Robertson by saying that the world is becoming “a single place”. It’s easy to mention Americanization, where we can observe the fast propagation of the American culture around the globe. Americanization is a concept who’s related to cultural imperialism.

Interesting point :

Cultural globalization is perceived differently according to where we are around the globe. Global imagination makes us think sometimes that Americanisation is the only culture who’s been propagated all around the globe, but that’s not true since history shows us that countries and culture around the globe is responsible of cultural globalization.

Discussion point :

Is there a way where globalization  could make small cultures not disappear in the future ?
