Reading 2: What is the relation between culture and globalization? Harun Sharif
Summary
In the article Tomlinson talks about a multidimensional globalization process, which is taking place simultaneously within the spheres of the economy, politics, technology, media and communications, environmental and culture. Meaning there are multiple categories that globalization can appear in such as, fashion, international trade, international diplomatic policies etc.
He explains that the globalization has developed at rapid speed due to the interconnectivity between many countries and this process has had a great influence on the way we live our daily lives. Furthermore, he talks about our understanding of the sphere of culture by stating some common phrases e.g., ‘the impact of globalization on culture’ or ‘the cultural consequences of globalization’. The reason these are common questions because of what globalization can do with one’s culture. It could be misinterpreted as a culture getting lost in the past due to ‘Westernization’ or ‘Americanization’.
One speculation is, because of the effects of connectivity of other spheres particularly the economic sphere where the global market provides the model, the globalization process will lead to a single global culture. However, there is no proof that the increasing connectivity will cause a unified global culture.
Interesting point
Due to the rapid speed in which the world develops, questions such as ‘What kind of impact will this have on our culture’ are unavoidable. I do not believe that globalization will the end of unique cultures. There are also no studies proving that globalization will cause this. However, I do believe that globalization will have some form of influence over cultures because, of how the world keeps evolving and we need to keep adapting with it.
Discussion
How will one globalized culture impact our world? Will it be beneficial to all of humanity if there were no cultural differences?
