Reading 3 Political globalization Harun Sharif

Political globalization is the idea of approaching politics on a postnational and transnational level. As time passes countries are trying to solve problems in a non-violent way and through cooperation. A good example of this the United Nations.

The author talks about three processes which interact to produce the complex field of global politics: global geopolitics, global normative culture, and polycentric networks.

Global geopolitics

The author says that the first step of globalization of a nation state, and its model of political membership and institutionalized governance, has given form to universal aspiration for democracy. The nation state is an important vehicle for political autonomy. A good example of this is most likely the EU. The EU the closest thing coming to international globalization.

Global normative culture

Having global norms in which all nations can agree on is an important step for the globalization of politics. Which has been spread out by INGOs for a long period of time and has helped with the development of the nation-state as a global form, has acted as a global vector for global norms of personhood.

Polycentric network

Polycentric networks, especially the development of global civil society, create new chances for an autonomy and recognition for a series of new actors and forms of governance, but can create instability and new dangers. The autonomy of civil society actors and the lack of accountability and democratic credentials, and in any case a tendency to be self-proclaimed spokespersons for the causes they support, creates new political spaces and transnational networks that are easily accessible by terrorists, drug and human traffickers, and organized crime in such a way as to undermine a nascent world state.

Interesting point

Unlike cultural globalization, politics in globalization is much more complex and works on a whole new level comparison to national politics. While there are organizations trying to achieve globalization in politics there are very few that succeed at this. One example of an organization would be the EU, which is still not perfect, but continues to improve and continues govern nations within the member states.

Discussion point

We can see that it is possible for nations to work as a supra-state. Is it possible for the rest of the world to work on this scale and how long would it take?
