Reading 3: Political Globalization - Dwisafira Dharanasari
a. Summary
The authors argue that political globalization can be understood as the tension between three processes that interact to produce a complex field of global politics; Global geopolitics, global normative culture, and multicentric networks. The globalization of democratic politics has been the foundation of "New World Order," which has been associated with the United States' pursuit of world domination and the legitimacy of world wars. Yhe second dimension of political globalization, global normative culture, is diffused in global political communication. Coupled with the global spread of democracy, political communication has become the foundation of a global normative culture that creates as much resistance to geopolitics as it supports them. It also focuses on environmental issues such as sustainable development. The third dimension, is less related to the states and can not be reduce to global normative culture. The third dimension can be called polycentric networks, it is a form of nonterritorial politics which emanate from a multiplicity of sites and which cannot be reduced to a single centre. Other than that, the two authors also argues that the direction of political globalization is transnational political action that challenges neo-liberal politics rather than the new global governance order and world society.
b. Interesting point
The interesting part lies in the statement regarding the center of the political conflict. Previously, major political conflicts centered on conflicts such as class divisions, traditional economic and industrial divisions, state versus civil society, and others. But now the political conflict has turned into individuals versus society, liberal democracy versus cosmopolitanism.
C. Question to discuss
The authors stated “The global public has a major resonance in all of communication in the sense that it structures and contextualizes much of public discourse, as examples ranging from human rights, environmental concerns, health and security illustrate.” What is the real example of public discourse that is structured & contextualized by the global public in human rights, environmental concerns, health and security?
