Reading 3: What is the relationship between politics and globalization?

 Political Globalization

Gerard Delanty and Chris Rumford

1. Summary

For some, political globalization provides an opportunity to liberate, but for others, autonomy is lost. The form of political globalization is the spread of democracy based on parliamentary nation-states.

In the global term, civil society is a space that is independent of global capitalism beyond the realm of state and government. Civil society was formed by international non-governmental organizations and various social movements. Countries have the ability to regulate. Currently, the function of regulation is not limited to one country, but it is implementing regulations through cooperation with other countries. The separation of nationality and citizenship has become very ambiguous due to the global normative culture, which can be seen as a phenomenon in which the boundaries between international law and the laws of a country disappear.

Communication is the center of politics. Nation-states are based on a centralized communication system where identity is produced based on media and popular culture. However, communication is a place where discussions on politics and culture can be discussed, and neither state regulations nor state agencies can fully control communication. The public domain is the scene of politics, a process of discourse debate. More important than this is the emergence of world public discourse, not the manifestation of discourse. The public domain is pervasive in being the global public. This means that communication can be filtered. The global public is a person who embodies political communication and public discourse.

The concept of civil society is the democratic need for checks and balances, especially to prevent the state from showing too much control. There is no consensus on the nature of global civil society, but we can see it through a number of NGO-led social movements

The concept of spatial turn means an increase in interest in how social space is constructed as well as social conflict and the environment in which social change takes place. his means that the boundaries of territories created by the process of political, economic, and social globalization disappear. The world can be experienced as one political space and create an area of action.

2. Interesting point

The content of civil society was very interesting. Scholte said that global civil society has global and cross-border communication within the organizational scope. I think this is the right argument. Because regardless of which country we are from, we are trying to solve the problems of the world. For example, Doctors Without Borders. It is one of several NGOs. This provides medical services for the people of countries suffering from wars and natural disasters and helps them live their daily lives. Doctors Without Borders activities include people from many countries, and they also provide help to them if they need help, even if they are not from their country. I often watched TV and saw advertisements about Doctors Without Borders. Through these advertisements, people around the world were expected to be interested in or participate in global civil society. Because I think we will be able to play a good role as members of the global civil society just by paying attention to them and donating, even if we cannot provide direct help.

3. Discussion point

We may have often seen 'fair trade coffee at the mart. In addition to coffee, there are many fair trade products, but the situation does not improve much even though people are purchasing these products. What efforts or methods should international cooperation organizations such as the United Nations make to solve this problem?

4. What is relationship between politics and globalization?

I think political globalization is helping developing countries develop further. The existence of organizations like the United Nations helps them develop. It serves to help them communicate with other countries. As a result, developing countries can live in better conditions. Also, I think it is political globalization to suggest ways to solve problems such as wars and hunger diseases in the world.

  2. I really enjoyed reading Hyerin's post. I think you've analyzed the relationship between politics and globalization from various perspectives on the areas I haven't looked at in detail. I agree that civil society has cross-border communication, and as a representative example, the activities of the Doctors Without Borders can induce more people around the world to pay attention to the global civil society.

Also, I believe that international cooperation organizations such as the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and non-governmental organizations will help communicate with other countries to promote organizational development and accelerate globalization. As a result, if developing countries, which are socially and culturally lagging, can solve national disasters and live in a better environment, they will be able to achieve significant political globalization worldwide. I'm glad to see a good article!
