Reading 3: What is the relationship between politics and globalization? (Hojeong Lee)
Political Globalization
Gerard Delanty and Chris Rumford
Political globalization has been recognized as the development of networks and flows as a transnational perspective, and has been discussed focusing on the decline of the state under the influence of global influence. Within the correlation between politics and globalization, some saw the possibility of liberation, while others saw the possibility of loss of autonomy and global division. This book emphasizes the multidimensional characteristics of globalization through political globalization.
We can see the spread of global democracy based on nation-states as the most common form of political globalization. This advocates that politics-based globalization does not weaken a democratic nation-state, but gives it acceptability worldwide.
Political globalization can be explained in three main dimensions: the first dimension is the geopolitics of world power, the second dimension is the rise of global normative culture, and the third dimension is a multidimensional network. According to the Geopolitics of World Power, the United States is constantly challenged by countries to a power center, even though it is a global powerhouse due to the globalization of democratic politics. In addition, according to the Rise of Global Normative Culture, political struggle and justification are closely related to global issues, and several countries are formed by global norms. And this process of political globalization is related to the flow of pluralistic networks. This means that new relationships between individuals, countries, and societies lead to symbols of a new type of global political system called a pluralistic network.
Understanding the meaning of political space and border nature and achieving political expansion as a result of globalization is considered a significant assessment. We should therefore focus on the connectivity of new space and forms and understand that political space is not simply defined as 'territory', but consists of social and political relationships.
As a result, the central topic surrounding the world's political culture, which operates for the stability of the nation-state, is the impact of tension between "loss of political autonomy" and "divide." Political globalization can be said to have injected new tension into the current structured political system. While previous political conflicts were mainly focused on class division and resistance to imperial rule, the current supplementary discussions are centered on rights, individual-community relations, and free democracy.
2. Interesting Point
The part that I found interesting while reading this book is about 'communication'. Recently, the center of politics has been referred to as communication. A centralized communication system is based on the formation of the nation's collective identity within the media and education system as well as media such as TV that delivers the nation's news. Even political parties are at the center of political communication to strengthen their social clout.
While reading the contents, I was able to recall the case of former U.S. President Donald Trump using SNS effectively. Through the so-called "Twitter Politics," he often left a memorable message with short and clear messages without using difficult words. Trump used SNS to break away from images of "real estate tycoons" and "racist" and to create an image of the common people. This seems to be a case of clever acceptance of the emergence of a "new public" and making good use of the fact that communication can lead to political and cultural competition.
Also, I enjoyed reading the part that mentions the image of the world without borders. The power of global unity, which transcends borders and unites through global disasters, tells us that interconnected forces make the Earth meaningful.
The emergence of interdependent levels of regional and regional, regional and national, and transnational and transnational political organizations will bring societies derived from globalization to a normal and sustained state.
3. Discussion Point
The author saw that political communication in the public domain is increasingly balanced by global issues. And it is thanks to the global civil society that has created a global normative culture, and it is said that the global normative culture plays a leading role in shaping political communication. Then, is there a case of political communication and change that was most prominent in terms of political globalization? If there is, I want to talk with you.
